The Bitter- and the Plant Material

Picea abies and Cold

We are experiencing a winter that we have not seen in 30 years. We have developed and introduced 30 years of new cultivars that have never been tried and true to their respective zonal classification. Will these plants truly survive their designated zone hardiness? Or will we find out that many are not as what the plant marketing companies have professed them to be. Time will tell but I suspect many of the newly introduced plants may be DOA lying in the snow!

My goal this year is to keep a running total of species and varieties that survived the cold and those that did not.  To be continued…
